About That Steven Guy

I’m an amateur fictioneer with a vague hope of someday losing my amateur status. For just over 17 years I worked for an unpopular federal agency that did a fair job of swallowing a little bit of my soul each day. If you know anything about the first few months of 2025 in the US you might know why I don’t work there any longer. 2025 in America also has something to do with me currently living in Central Asia.

I am an ordained minister of Dudeism. Yes, it’s real. http://dudeism.com/  I abide. My theological views are my own. Yours are yours. Let’s keep it that way and not talk anymore about it.

I have friends I like. At the moment, they all live in other countries, though one of them is just a few hours away over the border. The same can be said for family–other country. It’s a thing I’m getting used to, though to be honest the majority lived in other states even when we did live in the same country, so in a lot of ways nothing has changed but the time zones everyone is available online.

I rarely use my phone as a phone, except to call my parents and pay bills. Texting is my preferred method of communication most of the time. And I will admit to doing so while driving before. I try not to. (That’s not the worst thing I’ve done while driving, though, so karmically I think I’m okay)

You should watch Ted Lasso. You’ll feel better. Really.

I use The Princess Bride as a litmus test. That and dogs. If you like one or the other we’ll be okay. Both is fantastic. Neither? I won’t trust you, never will. Yes, I’m judging you.

I understand not everyone finds Monty Python funny. I feel bad for those people but I don’t judge them.

Musically, I’m sure your tastes are better than mine. I don’t care though. No, really. I don’t. Same goes for your politics–I would rather talk about Batman.

I prefer Marvel over DC. Kirk and Picard don’t need to be decided between because they were the right captain for the right Enterprise at the right time. Yes, I know Tennant was good but I still liked Eccleston. I grew up on Star Wars but I don’t anguish about the what Disney has done to my childhood. We got Andor. That makes up for anything.

Video games are cool, even if they don’t hold my interest like they used to.

I like genre fiction–it’s what I read and what I write. King is great. On Writing is great.  I drink Guinness. Prefer British TV humor to most American. I’ve only read one Harry Potter book, seen parts of the movies. Usual Suspects is the only movie that ever really surprised me with ‘the reveal’.

Firefly’s cancellation was stupid. Really stupid. That there aren’t at least two more seasons to watch is an injustice.

I have played RPGs (mostly various editions of Dungeons and Dragons) for most of my life. Not so much anymore–distance and time zones. Maybe soon

As some of the above indicates, I’m a geek. Have been my whole life. I’m good with that.

There are things about myself I need to improve. A lot of things. I’m good with that, too.
